In some cases, you may need to limit the upload and download speeds for any device connected to the same network, especially if a family member is obsessed with downloading high-quality games or movies via torrent programs, which can slow down the internet for everyone — and that’s very frustrating!
So, in today’s episode, I will explain step by step how to control the upload and download speeds for any device on the network using the SelfishNet program.
How Does SelfishNet Work?
The SelfishNet program tricks devices connected to the same network by making your computer appear as the actual router.
It does this by copying the router’s MAC address and using it, so other devices connect to your computer instead of directly to the router.
In this way, your computer acts as an intermediary between these devices and the router, allowing you to:
-
Control the download and upload speeds for each device on the network
-
Block internet access for any device you choose
How to Use SelfishNet
-
Download the version of SelfishNet suitable for your operating system:
-
For Windows XP: SelfishNet XP version
-
For Windows 7, Vista, or 8: SelfishNet Windows 7 version
-
-
After downloading and installing the program, if you are using Windows 7 or 8:
-
Right-click on the program
-
Select Run as Administrator
-
-
The program window will appear. Select the network adapter you are connected to.
-
Click on the Network Discovery icon on the far left to scan the network and display all connected devices.
-
Select the device you want to control the upload and download speeds for.
-
Set the Download Cap and Upload Cap according to your preferences.
-
Click the yellow icon to enforce the speed limit for this device.
-
If you want to block a device from the internet, select the Block option and click the yellow icon again to kick the device off the network.
Important Notes
-
If you encounter issues running the program, download and install the WinPcap driver, which is required for the program to function properly.
-
I will soon add a detailed video tutorial to explain the steps more clearly.
If you want, I can also create a shorter, easy-to-follow English guide for SelfishNet that’s ready to post as a blog or video script. Do you want me to do that?
